Welcome to my website everyone! It launches today, October 3, 2013, exactly 28 years after the space shuttle Atlantis first lifted off.
The connection is kind of cool, actually, and totally unplanned. Atlantis… a mythical place full of wonder… a real-life spacecraft… now the stuff of legends… firing the soul and the imagination… Hmmm… Dare I hope that the winds of destiny are blowing my way?
One connection is sure: my liftoff has come amid lots of smoke. I recently realized that in this world of so much noise and so many voices, I needed to learn how to take the digital reins of representing myself. Though I’m a pretty high-tech person, website mechanics have always been a mystery. But I can’t afford to pay someone every time I want to put something up online. (And my web-savvy friends can’t afford for me to keep bugging them.) So, I spent a lot of time thinking about “my brand,” and how to make things easy for visitors and myself. Finally, I took the plunge into understanding mysterious H-words like html, hosting, and hyperlinks. And here we are. Actually, most of the work is done by WordPress geniuses and I thank my patient brother James for all his help.
I’ve worked for years as a “marketer” and I spend a lot of time observing how other creatives find and grow their audiences. I am convinced that platform is critical… but content is king. No matter how fancy your site is, no matter how a particular demographic is initially titillated, no matter what celebrity connections you may have, no matter what social media gimmick supercharges your “likes”—in the end, content is king. My true audience will only grow if I give them something both of us value. I plan to not spend much time making this site cool, nor even to shower you with blog entries and tweets. I’ll be spending most of my time creating books and movies that you will love.
So, welcome to my site. Comment! Interact! Sign up! Share! SHARE!!! TomDurham.com is not my personal creative dumping ground. It’s about super cool stories intended for you, carefully curated from my creative cauldrons. Hopefully lots of cool stuff will be happening here for a long time to come. I know for sure that lots of cool stuff is happening right now…
